Kirkus Review

advance praise for BE

"[BEHIND EVERYMAN is a] breezy comic guide to dating, with a touching love story nestled inside. . . . Israel's first novel really can be enjoyed by both genders. . . . Israel is a budding comic talent. Think of this as a tasty appetizer, just the thing for that long flight."

kirkus couldn't have written a more wonderful review if i paid 'em. (and, no ma, i didn't pay them.)

Avedon Dead at 81

richard avedon died this morning of a brain hemorrhage. though i've linked to his site, it's down today. just a blank page, a black flag flying at half-mast, in the black of night.

i had the great fortune of knowing the man, of meeting him on several occasions. the memories of our conversations are flooding back now. as are the afterimages of some of his more dazzling photographs--many of which were just on display, a couple years ago at the met, during the avedon retrospective.

a journal entry here seems out of place. he is better remembered through visual images, and this one says so much...
